In the Central Valley we have cold winters to go along with
our hot summers. During the winter, a small draft can make
you feel a lot cooler so it is especially important to seal
up any air leaks you find. The tips and links below can
save you money on your energy bills and keep you more
comfortable.

ENERGY MYTHS:
Myth: It is more
efficient to have the heater on all day than to turn it on
when I first get home.
Fact: You will use less
energy if you set your thermostat lower while you are away
from home and turn it up when you return.
Myth: Setting my
thermostat to a higher temperature will heat the house more
quickly. Fact: Setting the
thermostat above your desired temperature does not heat the
house more quickly but will waste energy and money if you
forget to set it back.
Myth: Wall insulation
is just as important as attic insulation. Fact:
While all insulation will reduce your energy bill, the most
important place to insulate is your attic since heat
rises. |

TIPS TO SAVE ENERGY
Heating and
Insulation
- Install a
programmable thermostat.
- Set your
thermostat to 68°F or less during the day, 60°F or less at
night or when you are
out.
- Insulate attics, walls, and
flooring over unheated spaces.
-
Install dual-pane windows.
Air
Leaks
- Check doors and
windows to prevent air leakage out of your home. Use a good
quality caulking compound to
seal up any cracks you find around your windows or
elsewhere.
- If you have a fireplace,
close the damper tightly when it's not in
use.
Lighting
-
Turn off the lights when you leave.
- Use energy efficient
lamps - fluorescent lights come in a wide variety of
attractive models, not just the exposed
screw-type.
- Use LED holiday
lighting in place of regular holiday lights, they use 99% less
energy and last 50,000 to
100,000 hours.
Water Heater
- Use low flow showerheads and
faucet aerators.
- Reduce your hot
water heater temperature to 120°.
-
Repair leaking faucets or pipes. |
