Lighting

Lighting in the home plays practical and aesthetic roles. We read by it and cook by it; we entertain by it and sometimes highlight our landscaping or artwork with it. But lighting consumes about 20% of the energy used in a typical residence so it pays to use lighting wisely. Two solid tips to save energy are:

  1. Turn off lights when you leave a room or your home. This time-tested method has great savings potential.

  2. Use compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) in place of incandescent lighting.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps are five times as efficient as incandescent bulbs. They also last eight to ten times as long, and produce much less heat than incandescents do when they are on.

Although the most common types are the exposed ones shown to the left, many have a plastic or glass cover and look very similar to a incandescent lights including PAR type reflector lamps.
