CA Preschool Energy Efficiency Program Saves Over 4.5 million kWh for Hundreds of Sites

PreschoolThe California Preschool Energy Efficiency Program (CPEEP), implemented by the Low-Income Investment Fund and Intergy, is helping over 1,000 preschools save energy. The program, which is offered by SCE and SDGE in Southern California and PG&E in Northern California, provides a variety of energy efficiency activities for the state's preschools, including audits, lighting upgrades and HVAC tune ups.

While CPEEP targets state-licensed and Head Start sites, privately-funded preschools are also eligible. Participation in the program has been very strong and recent clients include Child Time/Tutor Time, KinderCare, Neighborhood House Association, Long Beach Unified School District and Los Angeles Unified School District. Many preschools have reported cutting their energy usage by half.

Last spring, CPEEP's efforts for the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF) won a Flex Your Power award. The program helped MAOF reduce over 280,000 kWh annually at their 25 sites. The energy efficiency upgrades for MAOF are projected to save over $40,000 per year.

CPEEP has completed over 400 site audits and helped them save over 4.5 million in kWh. Recently, the program has received numerous testimonials from satisfied customers including: Pediatric Therapy Network, St. John's Lutheran Church, Temple Emmanuel Beverly Hills, Trinity Lutheran Church, Options Child Care, YWCA Watsonville, Episcopal Community Services, The Institute of Human and Social Development, Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara County and Educational Enrichment Systems.

Healthcare Energy Efficiency Program Receives 130% in Commitments

sceIntergy's 2006-08 Healthcare Energy Efficiency Program for Southern California Edison continues to grow. This highly successful retrofit program targets acute care hospitals and related medical office buildings, which are some of California's major energy users. The program has been successful from the start and has quickly grown, receiving project commitments for 130 percent of its energy savings goals from major clients like Kaiser Permanente, Providence Health and the Veterans Administration. Because of the program's success, San Diego Gas & Electric has added it for the 2008 period.

Recent projects include extensive energy efficiency upgrades to Kaiser's data center at Corona, upgrades to the air handlers and elevators for the Veterans Administration healthcare facilities in Loma Linda and upgrades to the controls and energy management systems for two Providence hospitals. The Putnam Price Group and Mazzetti and Associates are Intergy's partners. The program receives support from the California Hospital Association and the California Society for Healthcare Engineering, two respected professional organizations that assist in communicating information about the program. Currently implemented with Southern California Edison and achieving higher than anticipated goals, HealthcareEEP is a proven energy efficiency plan delivering significant, measurable energy savings in one of the state's heaviest energy use sectors - substantial energy savings that the HealthcareEEP team is ready to bring to San Diego Gas and Electric.

SF Water Savers Program

The San Francisco Water Savers is another program that is producing results. Sponsored by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, Water Savers is designed to help businesses take advantage of some extraordinary new technologies, and save in installation as well as operation costs. Participating customers receive the dual benefits of reduced operational costs and substantial financial incentives to install new water-saving equipment. The program allows customers to cut their overall water usage up to 20 percent, implement projects with paybacks of less than a year, receive engineering and technical support, and to receive additional dollar incentives from PG&E. The program offers technologies such as air-cooled ice machines, chemical-free cooling tower treatment systems, laundry water reclamation systems, steam sterilizer water controls, and various water-saving process improvements.

The program targets San Francisco's heaviest water users and including industrial and commercial users like the Fairmont Hotel, St. Mary's Hospital, Silver Sprouts, WoChong Produce. Originally a pilot program, the program has delivered 447 acre feet in water savings and is fully-committed and on-track to reach its goal of saving 813 acre feet of water by July 2008. Within the City of San Francisco, the program also leverages energy saving programs such as PG&E's Lodging Savers Program enabling customers like the Fairmont Hotel to benefit from a holistic approach to reducing gas, water, and electricity consumption.
