Intergy begins Southern California IDEEA community college project

Los Angeles-A program that brings $1.2 million, and almost six million kWh in energy efficiency savings to two large Southern California community colleges was recently funded by Southern California Edison, one of California's largest publicly owned utilities. The project is one of Southern California Edison's 2004-05 Innovative Designs for Energy Efficiency Activities-IDEEA-awards. SCE awarded eight energy efficiency projects; this is the only one in the educational field. Split between the two large community college districts, San Bernardino and Los Angeles, the program provides a variety of energy efficiency activities that create immediate peak energy and demand savings. Additionally, it helps establish a permanent framework for a comprehensive, long-term, energy management program for California's community colleges.

The program covers five colleges at the two districts. For the San Bernardino Community College District, San Bernardino and Crafton colleges are involved. In the Los Angeles Community College District, Southwest, West and East Los Angeles colleges are included. Intergy, a Pleasanton-based energy management firm, is project coordinator.

Intergy, along with the planning and facility directors at the five colleges will identify the energy efficiency projects. From that point, equipment retrofits are agreed to and the work is generally completed by subcontractors or by the college staff.

The retrofits include interior and exterior lighting, chiller upgrades and other HVAC-related energy efficiency improvements, thermostats, motors, and vending misers. Projected savings for LACCD are 3,053,068 kWh and 462 KW; for SBCCD the savings are 2,843,304 kWh and 405 KW. As a whole, the projected savings are almost six million kWh and almost 900 KW.

The project will continue through May 2006.
